Canada’s first geothermal energy project has broken ground in southern Saskatchewan.

For the first time in Canada, drills are delving 3,500 metres beneath the earth’s surface in hopes of hitting an aquifer hot enough to produce geothermal energy, and Frontier Project Solutions has been awarded the Prime Contractor role including all aspects of drilling and completion design, planning, logistics and execution.

The test well near Torquay, Sask. is the deepest well ever dug in the province.

“Heat is the resource. Water is the medium to move the heat,” DEEP Earth Energy Production Corp. president Kirsten Marcia explained. “What’s essential in this project is that we’re able to move the water – in this case, actually, a brine – at a rate that will support a power facility. ”
